Crested Butte is an incredible place for those looking for untracked powder turns in the backcountry. Once we get enough snow, we get to skin right from the resort up to the old Pioneer Ski Hut and ski some great tree lines back home. A short drive from the Pioneer will take you to the popular ski areas of Red Lady Bowl, Conies Ridge, Snodgrass or Skyukill Ridge. With a continental snowpack the avalanche danger is often considerable here, so hiring a local guide is highly recommend for all but the most experienced of backcountry travellers. There are also weekend Avalanche Safety classed throughout the winter and guides can take inexperienced backcountry travellers out as well.
