Cottonwood Pass:

During the summer months you have another option to get to Crested Butte. From 285 after you pass the Gunsmoke Truck Stop near Buena Vista take a right on HWY 24 into Buena Vista (about 3 miles.) In the center of town take left toward Cottonwood Pass. Cottonwood Pass will take you into the National Forest over some beautiful terrain. At the top of the pass the road turns to dirt for about 12 miles until you hit the Taylor Reservoir. At a T intersection take a left toward Almont/Gunnison. Drive down the canyon approximately 20 miles. You will see Harmel's Ranch Resort on your left. About a mile after Harmel's you will see a dirt road heading of to your right. Know as "Jack's Cabin Cutoff" it is a 3 mile dirt/paved road that will take you to Hwy 135 about 4 miles south of Cement Creek Road. At T intersection take a right on HWY 135, drive 4 miles north. After you pass the 20 mile marker, take a right on Cement Creek Road. Drive two miles up and we are on the right.
*distances are approximate. Dirt roads are in generally good shape but are fairly narrow, with many curves and sometimes "washboarded." We strongly encourage you to have a Colorado map when driving over Cottonwood. Cottonwood is generally open from Memorial Day through October 1st unless there is too much snow.

* road conditions can be checked on-line at www.cotrip.org or by calling (877) 315-ROAD.

*Going over Cottonwood will save you about 25 minutes and will be a beautiful scenic drive.

*There is construction on HWY 135 between Gunnison and Jack's Cabin cutoff in the summer of 2004 so going over Cottonwood will allow you to miss sitting in construction traffic.
