You can cross-country or snowshoe right from your door at the Pioneer. We are also only 1/2 mile from the Walrod winter trailhead and 1 1/2 miles from the Cement Creek winter trailhead. There is something really special about being able to walk out of your cabin, through on your snowshoes and explore a snow covered valley amongst towering douglas firs. There are nice trails for the adventurous and those experienced with avalanche safety, who want to try climb Cement Mountain and find the old Pioneer Ski Hut or first timers who want to explore with their family on the valley floor. There are also many different winter railheads just a short drive from the Pioneer that are great for skiing or snowshoeing. Our favorites are the Slate River Valley, Brush Creek, Washington Gulch, skiing to the old town of Gothic, or a trip down to the Mill Creek Valley by Gunnison is a special treat and well-worth drive on a sunny day.
